While we aim to provide equitable access to our preschool program, we also recognize the immense salary disparities that early childhood educators face and the challenges this presents for the field of Early Childhood Education. The consequences of low teacher salaries include: higher levels of stress and burnout, increased teacher turnover rates, and less experienced teachers with little to no education and training. Furthermore, programs that do pay early childhood educators more, often do so by increasing class sizes, resulting in a high child:teacher ratio, which means there is less individualized attention offered. Low teacher salaries and high child:teacher ratios do not provide optimal learning conditions for children.

We see early childhood educators as professionals, but also as the heart and soul of our school. Therefore Stony Brook School believes it is essential to invest in, value, and support our teachers, by offering a full benefit package, a competitive salary, and by providing ongoing professional development to attract and retain experienced, educated, and well qualified teachers. Additionally, we are intentional to keep our classroom sizes small and our child:teacher ratios low.

Therefore you will see the real costs of providing a high quality early childhood program reflected in our tuition rates at Stony Brook School. By enrolling in our school, your child will directly benefit from the small class sizes and low child:teacher ratios which enables more individualized attention, small group interaction and thoughtful learning experiences that are responsive to the children’s needs. But also, you will be contributing to fair working wages for teachers and supportive working conditions that promote teacher retention. With added staffing, we are also able to provide our teachers with daily time to plan, reflect, and document children’s learning and growth. Therefore your child’s teachers will create individualized learning portfolios for each child, in addition to sharing highlights from their classroom’s learning experiences.

To ensure that we provide equitable access to our programming, we accept vouchers from families who demonstrate financial need and qualify.
